Vietnamese is the new Thai is the new Japanese.

With this in mind, we decided to try the Dragon Den on Victoria Street, Darlinghurst. Partly because it is one of the newer slews of Vietnamese dining in the city area and partly because Phamish is always too busy and I am impatient.

We were met with smiling faces and friendly service - which (it is sad to say) can somtimes be lacking on Victoria Street.

Despite the group of ten or so outrageously drunk people yelling at each other at the next table, the atmosphere was relaxed and cosy.

On the menu: sizzling king prawns in a mysterious 'special sauce' containing garlic, honey and dried chillies turned out to be rather buttery and a bit oily, however the salt and pepper squid was light, tender and well seasoned.

The menu also contained the usual gamut of DIY Vietnamese rice paper roll concoctions (don't order these on a first date) and some great fresh ingredients - coupled with a reasonable price tag, this place wasn't mind blowing but more a venue for a slighly fancier Chinese restaurant with a Vietnamese identity crisis.
