whitestone cheese

Cnr Torridge and Humber Streets
Oamaru, North Otago, New Zealand

Oamaru is good for three things. 1. Vintage shopping. I didn't find the Lynch print I was after but there are a lot of gems here if you're willing to sift. 2. Penguins. At dusk, the Yellow Eyed penguins come to shore for the night ... its totally freezing but absolutely breathtaking to see them coming ashore. 3. Cheese. Yes, this may be home to Mainland's factory, but just off Thames Street, the main drag in Oamaru, you'll find the Whitestone Cheese factory...unlike the Mainland cheese factory down the road - this fromagerie means business.

These award winning babies need to be tasted to be believed. Order the cheese board ($18 for a single, $28 for a double although the single is more than enough for 2). Big winners are the vintage Windsor Blue and the Double Brie - although everything is generally good here.

You can even see how it's done if you arrive in the morning, via the viewing room which gives you a unique insight into how those delicious lumps of golden goodness are formed.
