Remember those old school 50's movies where all you needed for a good time was a burger, a milkshake and your friends (I imagine mine to be bad-boy greasers and perky cheerleaders with a bad streak)?

Here's a good recipe for a great low-key inner-city date with that 'good old days' flavour.

Darlinghurst is full of great places to eat from all over the world. From Weiner Schnitzels to Mee Grob and everything in between, you can find it on Victoria Street.

But it takes a cheeky turn around the corner onto Surrey Street, just off Victoria to find one of the best burger joints in town. Burgerman. And yes, it's all about the burgers, man.

Whether you're into classics, or something a little left of centre, or even meat-free, you'll find a great range of burgers and definitely something to whet the appetite.

I say go classic and order the Super Burger. A more fun way of saying "I'll have a burger with the lot.", this baby is built from a combination of seasoned, tender beef patty, lettuce, tomato, pickles (and no, not a sesame seed bun and special sauce), cheese, bacon AND beetroot. Phew. That's a mouthful!

Burger politics are very personal, so if you're not into pickles (and they're fantastic dill pickles, finely sliced), or the quintessential Aussie staple beetroot, then ask for it without - although you may want to question just how Australian you really are.

And what else does a good burger need? Fries. Here they come crisp, thick cut and piping hot. These guys are licensed, so if the humidity gets a bit much, an ice-cold brewski will cure what ails you. Top it off with a homemade chocolate crackle. Just make sure it's from the fridge and not from the jar at the counter - they're sprayed with hairspray to keep their glossy sheen.

When you're done, there's nothing better in this growing heat than to stroll over to Gelato Messina for a gelato fix. You'll be met with a huge selection of simple to decadent and some deliberation is always necessary. Thank god these guys are patient!

Top pics are the coconut & pandan, lychee & coconut or taro for a fragrantly exotic fix. If you're more classically Italian experience try the tiramisu, bacio or malt chocolate with cereal. A girl could keep going, but last honorable mentions go to the fig flavour, all-time favourite pistachio and tarty lemon sorbet.

So there you have it, a modern twist on an old-fashioned date night. Just make sure your date partner gets flavours you like so you can “share”.

The sign on the Chocolate Crackle jar is insane. Maybe it's time to get rid of the "display jar".
