the inbetweeners

Late night eats, mid afternoon snacks - it happens all too often that in between those definite times of the day we've come to know as mealtimes, you get a little hungry...so here are a few places you can get great food in those in-between hours. It's no surprise many of the hot suggestions happen to be in Chinatown...Asians know no boundaries when it comes to when to eat.

Linner - The Fish Shop

Occupying the space that held the beloved Lotus in Potts Point for so many years, Merivale have made over the space, inspired by Cape Cod, Nantucket and other New England classics. It's about simple food treated with a little finesse - pots of prawns with house made aioli, Blue Eye fish fingers, Spencer Gulf king prawns, cuttle fish, chips, cocktail sauce and whole pickled japalenos (aka. fish and chips) and fish burgers with bacon and chilli. The Fish Shop is open from 12noon to 11pm, making it a great place to stop off for a quick snack and a cold beer.

Supper - Golden Century

If you're stuck for what to order, just recite the following to the waiter:

- XO pippies with crispy noodles
- Marinated duck tongues
- Hot and sour soup
- Fujian fried rice
- Roast duck
- Salt and pepper squid

..and you're on your way to super fun happy mealtimes. Open from 12 noon till 4am, there are no pesky breaks in the middle to reset the table between lunch and dinner, so this place qualifies as a bonafide in betweener. Add a couple of longnecks of Tsingtao and it's pretty much the perfect meal everytime.

Winners include kai dtun - steamed egg custard with chicken and salted duck egg yolk, pad prik king - crispy pork belly with wild ginger and red curry paste and the classic spicy green papaya salad, som tum.
