good cafe guide 2012

(as heard on FBi Radio on The Friday Delicious)

In case you've been living under a rock, our newspaper industry is in a bit of strife. Mining magnates and errors in judgement over the power of online aside, we really should be thankful for their contribution to the dissemination of news and ensure their place in our futures. Otherwise guides like the Good Cafe Guide don't happen.

The 2012 version of the above launched just this week, a celebration of those little heroes who prop us up in the morning and always remember how we - and several hundred other regulars - like our cup of Joe.

A definitive guide to the best of a very competitive bunch, the Good Cafe Guide is a pocked-sized bible to great cafes all across Sydney, so this weekend, pick up a copy with your Sydney Morning Herald for just $5 and you'll be buzzing well into 2013.

Best New Cafe: The Ground of Alexandria

Chicken coops, a kitchen garden, an on-site roastery and some pretty tasty food to boot, The Grounds of Alexandria is about as comprehensive as a cafe can get. Dodge the prams and pull up a seat for breakfast - there's house-baked bread, sexy ocean trout gravlax and even the seemingly ubiquitous fried chicken in there as well. Oh yeah, they make a decent coffee too.

Hall Of Fame: Bar Sport, Leichardt

On a street that championed coffee before coffee was cool, Bar Sport did it first. The oldest cafe in Norton Street, if you're into your football (that's soccer to youse), and in particular, yelling at the screen when your team is winning, fuelled by espresso and bolstered by salami and provalone brioche...then this is the cafe for you. Doing it since 1950 and still going strong.

Best Coffee: Coffee Alchemy, Marrickville

If you want to know who makes some of the best coffee in Sydney, remember this name: Hazel de los Reyes. Forget Pacino, Hazel knows good coffee. And when it's this good...who needs to eat? Coffee nuts and newbies alike should come and see what all the hoo ha is about - flavour, aroma, depth, acidity...all the elements combine here for..well, coffee alchemy.
