sydney bucket list, the beginning

This week's Friday Delicious on FBi Radio is inspired by my friend Danielle, who has lived in Australia all her life and is now moving to San Francisco. She's a gal about town. She knows her cocktails, her wine lists and where to eat. But faced with leaving the country in t-minus 4 weeks, it has become apparent that she has some eating and drinking to do before she leaves.

Here, in no particular order are three places you should visit before you leave Sydney if you've never been there before and why.

Lunch by the water - Otto Ristorante

What Sydney lacks in cobbled laneways and subterranean bars, we make up for with stellar harbour views and luxe living. Perhaps the most notorious of these locations is the Cowper Bay Wharf in Woolloomooloo. Sitting on the edge of the harbour, surrounded by cigarette boats and luxury cruisers, the occasional b-grade celebrity (and one time I was there, Marilyn Manson) Otto is the perfect mix of relaxed Italian food (think silky, handmade pasta, pork belly with toffee-crisp crackling and salumi for days) relaxed al fresco dining and super smart service. Arguably one of Sydney's best locations for a long, boozy lunch, this place should come with a strict DNR (do not return to the office) policy.

A cocktail with a view - The Island Bar

A seasonal bar of sorts, it might not be open all year round, but it's open all the months of the year that count. From October to April, jump on a ferry and head to Cockatoo Island for cocktails a go-go, surrounded by stunning Sydney Harbour. Constructed from salvaged pieces of shipping containers, the bar is a gussied up industrial chic playground, complete with deck chairs to kick back on, while you nibble on charcuterie, sip negronis and watch the sun set.

Bondi Beach - The Bucket List

Sure, we've talked about Icebergs and North Bondi Italian a million times, so if you're after a new Bondi classic, The Bucket List just might be worth the trip. Arguably one of the most coveted positions on the promenade, the space was inhabited by one hell of a horrific tourist trap for several years, selling over priced seafood to tourist busloads by the dozen. Those days are behind us now, and The Bucket List has reclaimed the space for locals as well as tourists to enjoy. A relaxed menu of Australian seafood, treated simply and with respect is well worth picking through, and the bar staff are adept at handling obscure cocktail requests as much as the next waxy moustachioed, three-piece suited gentleman.
