la piadina

What do you get when you add a beachside location, expert knowledge in cooking, a love of Vespa scooters and two hot Italian brothers? You get La Piadina.

Most people identify the shops opposite Bondi stalwart, the Beach Road as purveyors of cigarettes, condoms and Dagwood dogs. To the contrary, it’s fast becoming a destination of cool, with Parlour X’s sale store, the Organic Bakery and La Piadina all moving in over the last 6 months.

For those who are freaking out because they thought they knew everything there is to know about Italian food, Piadina is an Italian flatbread of Roman origins, kind of like a Mexican Quesadilla in terms of concept. It’s crisp on the outside, soft and doughy on the inside, with every kind of filling from bresaola to nutella and everything in between.

The shop is all cool dark wooden interior, 50’s rock’n’roll music and high tables for perching and perving on the boy’s..erm technique. Seriously, it’s engaging viewing: Balls of dough are kneaded and flattened on the large hotplate stove, where they are spread thinly, a little like how Roti is made. This is then flipped, filled and folded before being served up on a wooden chopping board, a perfect crescent-shaped piece of heaven.

Whilst you may think Piadina might be more of a lunch thing, the boys tell us that it’s popular all day long, particularly at breakfast. Bondi locals are finding it an egg-free alternative to breakfast and the boys also churn out a mean coffee if you can’t function without one, first thing in the morning.

There are combinations of proscuitto, rocket and mozzarella, as well as those including spicy salami, mushrooms and reduced balsamic glaze, all ranging from $9.00 to $12.00. One per person is generally a good rule of thumb, but if you’re really hungry, try ordering three shared between two people.

To top it off, there are no attitudes and bad service to be found. From the moment you step in, until you leave, you’re treated like friends, and should you have a problem making a decision, they’re happy to help.

La Piadina is everything good about Italians and Italian food. It’s also proof positive that good Italian food isn’t just found in Haberfield.

Staff are beautifully friendly and helpful - La Piadina has the simplest freshest ingredients - like prosciutto shaved for your very own order and roasting tomatoes on the side of the hotplate.
